American Attack on Venezuela Raises Fears of Potential Greenland Annexation.

Recent US-led military action in the South American nation and the capture of its leader have sparked apprehension regarding Washington's ambitions on Greenland. Followers of the former president's political movement have allegedly turned their attention to the resource-rich island following the operations in South America.

Inflammatory Messages and Diplomatic Backlash

Merely a short time following the commencement of the Caracas campaign, a prominent right-wing commentator, who is married to a high-ranking White House adviser, posted a suggestive image. The graphic showed Greenland draped with the American flag, accompanied by cryptic message: "COMING."

This blatant threat to claim the mineral-rich land, which is a member of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and strong criticism from Danish representatives.

"We are strong partners and should keep cooperate as such. US security is equally the Arctic's and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "Our nation and the US collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The diplomat additionally highlighted that the kingdom had substantially boosted its military budget this year, earmarking a large sum expressly for Arctic and North Atlantic defence. "Furthermore, we demand full respect for the territorial integrity of the our realm," he added.

Administrative Moves and Strategic Goals

The tensions were additionally exacerbated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The governor had publicly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "privilege" to serve in a volunteer role to "bring Greenland into the US."

In a significant media appearance, the president declined to rule out the use of armed action to acquire Greenland. This stance comes during intensifying global rivalry in the Arctic. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he stated.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Indigenous Resistance

In response to this constant "rhetoric" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The leaders of both Greenland delivered a joint and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not take over other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a nuanced picture. While a vast majority of the island's inhabitants desire independence from Denmark, there is also scant appetite to join the United States. The territory has had the legal right to seek independence for many years.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Scenario?

Military analysts are increasingly re-evaluating the possibility of such a move. One policy director specializing in defence admitted she had once discounted the rhetoric but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a few hundred or a couple thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could do anything about it," she observed.
