An Significant Milestone when Liam Rosenior Transcends Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a quality tactician that understands football back to front, and that's the crucial factor.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's first black footballer, I would be lying to claim this appointment does not affect me."

Those are the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, who made his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea hired Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, 41, to be their new head coach following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo that also owns Chelsea.

There have been a mere 12 black head coaches – not including those holding temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since it began 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is he grew up and developed his game not far from here, he knows the local fans," continued Canoville.

"Whenever kids observe someone like Liam in charge of the team they support, a person who looks like them, who's from their ends, who comes from a household that champions equality… that's impactful and shows them the path is there.

"Indeed, this represents an enormous moment for Chelsea, for London, for all aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? Let's back Liam, provide him with the necessary tools, and let the man get on with the job."

What Does the Statistics Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager in 1996 and became the top flight's inaugural African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, by 2008, Paul Ince became the first English black boss in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer of colour.

The lack of managers of colour across English football is matched by a lack of diversity at executive level.

As per the BFP 2023 report, 43% of Premier League players come from black backgrounds.

Yet, research from the equality organization revealed only 3.2% of executive and leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

At first-team coaching positions, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the figure is two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the figure is 5%.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of him being announced as Chelsea manager, and we want to see more of that," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged there is loads of ability that exists in the black and underrepresented communities... they desire the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to persist in work hard to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become the fourth full-time British head coaches presently in the Premier League – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – which lags behind Europe's remaining big five leagues regarding homegrown representation.

Sixteen of the 20 top-flight managers in Italy are Italian, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German while 10 of the 18 in France.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "passionate", noting that he understood the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. The striker is expected to join him with a move from France to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted he was "embarrassed" upon hearing an unnamed coach utter a discriminatory remark. He pledged his support for the Rainbow Laces initiative and authored an open letter to Donald Trump during his first US presidency, condemning his "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

Rosenior said goodbye at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal at Chelsea.

The Blues had the top flight's first African heritage boss with Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
