At least 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Largest Security Action on Organized Crime
At least 64 civilians died in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's history.
Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. In excess of 80 suspects were arrested.
Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho countered with shooting, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization said it was "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.
Local authorities stated at least 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".
