Heroic Rail Employee Endures Severe Wounds During Mass Knife Incident on Express Train
A valiant train staff member who stepped in to protect travelers during a multiple stabbing incident on a express train has suffered life-threatening wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.
Particulars of the Terrifying Incident
CCTV footage reportedly depicts the staff member attempting to halt the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured victims running through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in custody for questioning. Police announced a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
Emergency Response and Consequences
The incident on the weekend led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Several individuals have now been released from hospital.
A witness filmed the individual waving a big knife and being subdued with a Taser as he faced officers on the station. He was reportedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."
“This awful event has created broad consequences. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – particularly the courageous member of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by trained officers,” stated a senior law enforcement officer.
Union Response and Calls for Measures
Rail associations were quick to commend employees and call for more measures. One labor leader stated he would be “seeking immediate discussions with government, rail employers and police to guarantee that we have the strongest available assistance, tools and effective procedures in place”.
Another association representative encouraged the train operator and government “to act quickly to review safety, to support the impacted employees, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.
Operator Praised for Rapid Action
The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was described as being “very shaken” but “good”, and has been praised by union representatives for doing “precisely what was needed”.
“He did not halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s obviously challenging for the emergency services to access, but he carried on going until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much already there,” stated a association representative.
Additional Information
Police said they got the first emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One witness recounted initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween prank, but quickly understood from people's expressions that it was serious.
Police have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the incident was a terror-related attack and have requested the public to provide with any additional information.
Train operations on the affected route are expected to have delays until the following day, with passengers recommended to defer their travel where possible.
Anyone with details that could help the investigation are encouraged to contact police by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
