The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at both ends of the field

After a drab weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

What next for both teams?

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
