Praise from Guardiola for ‘Street Footballer’ Cherki Before Villarreal Fixture
City manager Pep Guardiola, previously coached icons including the Argentine maestro, the Spanish genius, and the midfield orchestrator, stated that the French attacker ranks among the most gifted players he has ever observed and believes the forward will adopt the collective approach at the club.
Recovery Update
Cherki, who joined the Sky Blues from Lyon in a £30.5m deal ahead of the Club World Cup in June, has managed just seven outings to date. Coming back from a thigh problem, he came on for a five-minute stint in the win against the Toffees recently, in which he came close to assisting a third for Haaland.
Now, he is heading to Villarreal where he have his Champions League first appearance in a City shirt.
Coach’s View
Despite asking for time, Guardiola struggled to fully describe his talent, admitting that the biggest doubt might be how he fits in into the structure and adapts to performing basic actions effectively.
“Rayan is some of the greatest stars I have ever seen in my career,” commented the coach, puffing out his cheeks. “On a technical level he is top-class. The key is his integration and his understanding of the game, what every action needs. He started at the Club World Cup, though he was sidelined. We have to go step by step, yet his ability is obvious: I have the sense that most of the time when the play comes to him, the attack becomes more dangerous.
“It’s not necessary for him to attempt extraordinary things; he ought to make basic plays. Still, he owns something unique. Such as the assist for Erling late in the game, along with numerous other things he can do.
“He is a player unfazed by tension in possession. He resembles a street footballer. He gets frustrated – ‘pass it to me’ – when he doesn’t get it, obviously. He hasn’t been a short time in the team; it will take a bit because you must connect with teammates.”
Inquired if the youngster will adapt within the group dynamic, Guardiola responded: “Without a doubt. Such individuals have great feel, very smart. They perceive it all.”
Kudos for the Midfielder
The City manager likewise highlighted Nico González, who is expected to feature in the engine room. The team’s usual starter is present back to his old team, and should be recognized ahead of the game at the Estadio de la Cerámica, though he misses out due to a muscle injury.
The manager said: “I feel that Nico is progressing steadily. We’re really satisfied with his behavior and he ought to keep getting better. He is well-rounded, receptive, a lovely guy. His parents should be extremely proud of the man and player he has become. He has to remain authentic, but when you play next to world-class talent, you gain experience. You see how you can get better, but Nico must be Nico, certainly.”
Team’s Strong Form
Guardiola also spoke glowingly regarding the team’s recent performances. “We net plenty of strikes, producing a wealth of chances, and we are giving up little. It’s only eight league games plus two in the Champions League, yet I believe that every match is better than the last and is worse than the upcoming.
“We discuss a lot ways to enhance and methods to read the game better. I hold strong trust in the players and I know they are training intensely. We are showing very good form.”
