The new statue was presented in the London landmark on the start of the week.

The Oscar-winning actress has called the freshly installed statue of Bridget Jones as “delightful”, adding, “In my opinion, it’s a lot sweeter than me.”

Zellweger was speaking as the recently revealed statue celebrating the beloved figure she portrayed for more than 20 years was uncovered in the heart of the city on Monday.

Bridget Jones was created in 1996 by writer Helen Fielding, and originally translated for the movies in the early 2000s. The newest movie debuted earlier this year.

Speaking at the ceremony, Fielding did not dismiss continuing the series, stating you should “always keep options open.”

Zellweger explained that everyone can connect with Bridget, which highlights her huge appeal.

“Her vulnerability, her humanity,” she said. “We identify in her, we connect in her struggles.

“It gives permission for the everyone else to be authentically who we are. Imperfect.”

The character of Bridget Jones touched many women’s hearts, who felt understood in her trials and tribulations.

From her embarrassing work incidents, to her infamous granny pants, Bridget connected with a generation who found a mirror in her—and has gained a whole new set of younger fans too.

The new installment in the series, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, was released in early this year, and sees Bridget living as a single mother and exploring contemporary romance.

It received varied critiques, but achieved the strongest theatrical launch ever for a love story in the British Isles, according to industry sources.

The film was described as the final one in the franchise—but reflecting at the event, two superfans, Faye and Wayne, said they were sure there would be a follow-up.

“There were so many things that were open-ended at the finale of the last film,” said Faye.

“Bridget keeps growing. I want to be with Bridget Jones all the way to the nursing home,” said Wayne.

When asked about the prospect of a new chapter in Bridget Jones’ saga, Fielding said: “Anything is possible. Stories come to you as a author. So if a concept came to me that I thought was authentic and interesting and new then I would develop it.”

Some think the struggling and human heroine, who’s obsessed over her appearance and romantic situation, is not the ideal inspiration.

And Fielding herself has acknowledged in the past that some parts of the narrative seem less relevant today.

Bridget Jones’s Diary would be impossible to produce now, set now, because all those male coworkers would be sacked,” she said previously. “It was a really different time.”

But reflecting on the unveiling day, she said she wished the overarching idea of the book would remain relevant for fans.

“I think, to have the comfort of seeing a character that you can identify with, because they are real and flawed and vulnerable, it’s like having the confidante you can be honest with,” she said.

The sculpture is the first to honor a romantic comedy on Leicester Square’s movie trail trail.

The cinema sculpture trail first debuted in recently with the introduction of eight sculptures including Laurel and Hardy, Mary Poppins, Batman, Bugs Bunny, Don Lockwood, Paddington Bear, Mr Bean and Wonder Woman.

After that, sculptures of the wizard hero, the Iron Throne from Game of Thrones, the beloved dog and the explorer have been added.
