The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent developer-focused presentation was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. But, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To understand this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, like the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems especially strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.

Several the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even begun—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year so far.

When these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
