Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Speech
On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
